The Beach belongs to everyone

We want Long Island to be a place where this, and the next generation can surf, windsurf, sail, swim, sunbathe, fish, kayak or just soak in Long Island's Natural Beauty.

Long Island is losing its waterfront and wet lands to private homes at an alarming pace. Beach Access is disappearing right along with it. In addition, many NYS laws concerning Beach Access are archaic at best.

It is not LIBAG's intent to take away any existing rights of NYS Beach users. Only to add to them.

We are fortunate, to be working with the Long Island Regional State Parks Commission towards solutions that would allow all beach user groups equal access to all NYS Parks Beaches, with out excluding or taking away any access rights from any user groups.

The Long Island Beach Access Group is most commonly known for its four core programs;

1- The Beach Access program whose research and advocacy programs support the maintenance and expansion of access to those remote beach locations on Long Island for all users.

2- Also, our Beach Preservation program works to sponsor, participate and encourage those activities that ensure the healthy maintenance of our beaches and barrier islands, such as beach grass plantings.

3- Our Beach Clean-up program works to sponsor, participate and encourage continual beach clean-ups in conjunction with the America Littoral Society. This includes the adoption of Gilgo Beach.

4- But also, Long Island Beach Access Group is known for our Beach Actions program which seeks to encourage and reward proper behavior when enjoying the beaches. This includes following the official rules and regulations of each of the beaches and areas that provide access to those beaches, promoting the “Carry in, Carry out more” philosophy, and in a more informal fashion, instructing people on safe enjoyment of our natural resources.

Remember: it is not LIBAG's intent to take away any existing rights of NYS Beach users. Only to add to them.

LIBAG is honored to work with New York State Park officials, as we continue to connect the Parks to the People.

We look forward to our continued work with New York State officials in order to implement solutions that encourage more diverse use of NYS’s Beaches.

760 POUNDS

Gilgo  Clean-Up, hosted by LIBAG, South Shore Paddleboards & The Town of Babylon

What a busy and fun day Saturday was for the beach clean up at Gilgo !!

Wow.
We were almost overwhelmed with all the people who volunteered;  but we handled it.

Signing in at our side of the tunnel entrance were 86 people. Thanks to Ray Eriksen, Stevie Jo Pace, Ron Tergesen, Frank Messina, Bill Zeller, Tino Sarmiento, and Ken Hudes for checking people in and out.

On the other side of the path to the Beach was Save the Beaches,
organized and run by Mary Beth and Jim Schappert of Oak Beach and their 100+ people.

Overall we collected 760 POUNDS of debris of all types... barrels, metal cages, cigarette butts, plastic and glass of all kinds, and of course, balloons, grrrr, and other nasty stuff.

Councilwoman Jackie Brown from the town of Babylon along with other officials came down for a photo op in front of the Gilgo Beach Inn.
Thank you to Paul and Steve from the Inn, for your support!

Karen Vaccaro Marvin owner of South Shore Paddleboards http://www.southshorepaddleboards.com

and the SUPers were doing their thing in the water off the docks. They brought in plenty of debris. Thanks!

We just want to let everyone know that LIBAG - Long Island Beach Access Group, appreciates the support and friendships built over the years.

And we can't forget Florence Findley from the Town of Babylon for her friendship and guidance over the many years we have been doing this as a combined effort.

Special thanks to Jim and MaryBeth, for the use of your muscles and truck for hauling away the garbage to the containers... THANKS!

Did I mention it was a beautiful day? It was!

Core to LIBAG's mission is to foster mutual sharing of our beautiful resources by a variety of enthusiasts.

We have recently learned of a dispute on the beach in Montauk that led to a physical attack.

LIBAG DOES NOT condone this behavior and in no circumstances should anyone ever become physical.

LIBAG has ardently worked together with various sports and user groups to ensure accessibility while maintaining a sustainable environment for our remarkable waterfront.

Core to LIBAG's mission is to foster mutual sharing of our beautiful resources by a variety of enthusiasts.

LIBAG, The Long Island Beach Access Group, LIBAG.ORG
The Long Island Windsurfers Group,
The American Littoral Society, https://www.littoralsociety.org
And the Town of Babylon, http://www.townofbabylon.com
will team up for the
September 29th, 2018 NYS Beach Cleanup,

Every year tens of thousands of volunteers remove and collect data on tons of debris from hundreds of miles of shorelines across New York State as part of our annual NY State Beach Cleanup.

Why New York State Beach Cleanup is different than other cleanups:
While the activities on the day of the cleanup are important and receive much positive publicity, the compilation, analysis and dissemination of the data collected have an even greater impact. This cleanup is unique in that volunteers fill out data cards about what they remove. This data is summarized for individual sites and all data cards are sent to The Ocean Conservancy for analysis. The resultant studies produce strategies to combat marine pollution and help inform policy makers, the media and the public about solutions to the problem.

So please join us September 29th, 2018 at Gilgo Beach at 9:00 AM, for our largest Beach Cleanup of the season.

We at LIBAG want to thank you in advance for all your help.

We hope to see you there.

If you are unable to help us at Gilgo, we encourage you to participate at one of the many Statewide cleanup’s scheduled for that day.

We at LIBAG hope you enjoyed your holidays

We at LIBAG hope you enjoyed your holidays and all this beautiful snow.

LIBAG has been busy behind the scenes working on some access concerns with NYS Parks.

Below please find the press release from NYS State Parks. It explains what's available for sale starting January 2nd -through March 31st. This is mainly for off road (4x4) and other Special permits.
NOTE: There is an Error in the press release about the Four-Wheel Drive Vehicle Surfing Permit. We met with the Parks Staff and secured access to Democrat Point from January 2nd to December 31st for Surfing !! That's New!!! We no longer have to wait until April 1st to get on to Demo and surf!!

Hither Hills and Napeague 4x4 areas continue to be year round Surfing destinations.
If you haven't checked out either of these areas out east, you should. Napeague is about the same length as Gilgo State Park (Hemlock area/Coast Guard), with a couple of nice breaks. ( Gilgo State Park is still closed for the foreseeable future due to severe erosion. There are no active plans to dredge and fill that we know of)

4x4 permits have gone up in price from $ 65 to $ 80 per permit.
That’s $80 for surfing and $80 for fishing.
The LI Parks submitted a request to Albany to offer the second permit at a discount if purchased at the same time for the same vehicle for a total of $ 125.00, but Albany did not go for it.

Remember that you need your NYS Parks Empire Pass.
If you purchase this on-line before March 31st, they are $65.
If you wait it will cost $80. Also note that the Empire Pass is now a card. Not a decal. You just need one card.

Also, remember that the 4x4 Surfing permit grants us access to closed fields 3 and 4 at Robert Moses from September 15th to December31st.

Another note: The 4x4 Fishing Permit access remains the same, beginning on April 1st, thru December 31st at Democrat Point.

We have tried unsuccessfully for many years now to change the hourly access window through the summer months at Democrat Point.  The state refuses to budge, even for an hour or 2 on either end of the 7-5 "curfew ", for lack of a better word.

And, we're continuously requesting, but not getting, One Permit for 4x4 access. Every other jurisdiction that we know of on Long Island has One Permit!! The state is obstinate in not changing that.

We're also not content with Sore Thumb being excluded from the Surfing 4x4 Permit. Parks does not consider that a Surfing beach so it's off limits. Several windsurfers would love to have that location as a launch site. So Sore Thumb stands alone as a Fishing 4x4 Permitted location!!We will also continue to lobby for year round access for Heckscher State Park.

So, there it is, a long ramble of where we are at and what we still have on our plate with NYS Parks.

In other news......LIBAG has renewed our Contract with the Town of Babylon by  continuing our adoption of Gilgo Beach as part of Babylon’s Beautification Program.
Once again LIBAG organized and ran the Mid September beach clean up at Gilgo Beach. LIBAG partnered with The American Littoral Society and New York State.

We, along with 70 volunteers, documented and gathered 333 pounds of trash between Gilgo and Cedar.  Including:
2073 cigarette butts,
469 food wrappers(candy, chips, etc.),
468 straws,
323 bottle caps,
149 plastic bottles,
60 beverage cans,
89 balloons,
45 glass bottles,
329 metal bottle caps, etc.
It was a great day, with great weather. Thanks to all who participated!!

See you at the beach, best regards,

The Long Island Beach Access Group
